
Winter in Mala Tsarkva/Borovets
The snow usually covers the whole area from mid December until the end of March and still covers the peaks right into the middle of summer.
![]() | When visiting in winter, Borovets is obviously the place to head for. It is the oldest and most popular mountain resort in Bulgaria, lying at 1350m. It is set in pine woods and provides a variety of ski runs amongst beautiful scenery. All levels of skiers are catered for and it is particularly good for beginners. The skiing facilities have undergone a lot of improvements lately, with new lifts and runs. These are part of the Super Borovets Project, an enormous investment in the area aiming at an Olympics bid for 2014. There are many more lifts and runs planned and the improvements are set to continue for several years |
The ski runs for are designed with international markings and multilingual signs. Pistes are bashed and maintained to the high standard. The ski runs of Borovets are located in three different regions. Cross-country and biathlon tracks are located 2 km away from the resort together with the cross-country tuition tracks. Borovets ski centre is serviced by well organised lift system, inclusive of Gondola lift. 8 snow cannons for artificial snow are installed to guarantee the snow cover if needed. The Borovets ski school is known as one of the best in Bulgaria. There are more than 200 ski instructors fluent in foreign languages and some of them are former professional skiers.
Apres Ski
Borovets is full of bars, cafes, night clubs, discos. The night life is excellent at this resort (Buzz bar, Mamacitas, Bonkers disco, etc). This resort is known as the most interesting ski centre regarding party time. Its been catering for foreign tourists for many years now, the staff are known to be friendly and professional. Most of the places work till the early morning, and offer good prices and special 'happy hour' discounts Music played is mostly international dance music. Very often special shows are presented at the clubs.

Non-skiers are also provided with lots to do including bowling, swimming and fitness facilities based in the larger hotels. Borovets is famous for its party atmosphere. Some of the finest Bulgarian beers, such as Zagorka, Kamenitza and Astika, are readily available in bottles or on tap. The same applies for the locally-brewed Heineken, Amstel and Stella Artois. The national alcoholic drink, a grain-based liquor called Rakia, is readily available. You can also get imported beer and liquor brands, but these are approximately twice as expensive as the local brands.

Restaurants to suit all tastes
There are restaurants to suit all tastes: steak, pizza, Bulgarian cuisine, Turkish, Indian and Chinese food and much more. Menus at the restaurants are invariably translated into English, so you won't have any problems.
